First Medal in 2017 Universiade Taken from NTNU Athletes

The 2017 Summer Universiade started on August 20th. On the first day, the Taiwan team took 1 silver and 2 bronze, and 1 silver and 1 bronze are from NTNU athletes. Lin Kan Yu, a sophomore at the Department of Athletes Performance, received silver in Women’s Individual freestyle Poomsa and Chen Chien Chuan, who just graduated from NTNU, received bonze in Men’s individual freestyle Poomsae.
Taekwondo Poomsae is the style of conduct which expresses directly of indirectly mental and physical refinements as well as the principles of offense and defense resulting from cultivation of Taekwondo spirit and techniques. In the past, only compulsory poomsae can be seen in universiade. This year, freestyle poomsae is introduced and accounts for 40% of final grade. Lin Kan Yu, tiny in height, but powerful in her move. She has been performing perfectly and ranked second to Vietnamese athletes Nguyen Thi Le Kim. Lin said that the announcement of adding freestyle poomsae was made in January so there was limited time of preparation.
Chen Chien Chuan, went on stage after Lin, was too nervous and didn’t do as good as usual. However, he was ranked fourth and got a bronze medal. According to the rule of FISU, those who ranked 3rd and 4th could both get a bronze medal, so Chen will receive a bronze. Officer from Sports Administration said that Chen can apply for the National Honor Prize and get 225,000 as a bronze medalist.
